Update 1.4.1

Writer: McShmoodleMcShmoodle

More Character Profiles!

  • Legendary NPCs have been revised and expanded. Introducing Cream, Vector, Espio, Charmy, and Blaze!

    • Formatting has been adjusted for character names to include their full titles ("the Hedgehog", etc.)

    • Legendary NPCs have been divided into subheadings based on their grouping or affiliation for easier reference

    • Character power levels vary, some are classified as Sub-Bosses rather than full Boss tier NPCs, with stats more in line with starting player characters

    • Minor stat discrepancies have tidied up, and certain characters have received adjustments to make them more distinct from each other (my boy Big the Cat now has Power 7, he's large and in charge!)

  • Reworked rulebook introduction, which previously contained outdated and redundant information regarding player options

    • The new introduction focuses more on overviewing the game experience as a whole

  • Additional sections have been revised for general tone and best practices reinforcement.

    • A reference to players having their Mobiums pick-pocketed is now omitted. This scenario is now generally discouraged since player money is analogous to earned XP. This is not to say that it can't or should never take place if done with care, but suggesting it immediately after explaining what money can be used for invites a line of thinking not in the current spirit of the system. This space is now used to expand on what money can be used for.

    • An example scenario casually depicting players sabotaging each other for laughs is now revised to be more neutral. Every group is different and some may relish this dynamic at their table, but including it here was a relic of the earliest versions of the rules which had a much more informal tone. It now feels out of place.

  • Reworded and expanded guidelines for creating Signature Attacks. The previous description for Spin Attacks made great pains to distinguish "Spin Dashes" from the base spin attack. This text has been moved to a new box that offers suggestions for creating variants for all types of attacks.

  • A callout has been added in the Intro Adventure, acknowledging the discrepancy between the Lanolin in the game and the one currently being featured more prominently in Sonic media, indicating that this is the version seen in early issues of the IDW comics

  • Fixed more typos and formatting errors

This is primarily a touch-up update for various formatting inconsistencies that have cropped up over the game's various iterations. The introduction, for example, had vestigial elements that had been overlooked, such as referring to Charisma as Charm in one instance (that one's going to haunt me), and it still insisted that the game was meant for three PCs, despite the most recent update encouraging groups of four.

Additionally, the section on Spin Attacks in the Character Creation section was needlessly granular, so I took the time to streamline the section and include more guidance on creating unique attacks.

I also found myself tidying up the Legendary NPCs section, so while I was at it I rounded out the game character NPC roster to a more "complete" listing. More characters may be added in the future, but for now, GMs and players alike may be happy to know that all of the "Sonic Heroes" are now in the game inspired by their namesake.

Finally, I made a token effort to call out the elephant in the room regarding Lanolin's depiction in the starter adventure. The funny thing about Lanolin is that when I initially conceived of her inclusion in the game, I was simply trying to spice up the encounter with a familiar face for an otherwise mundane exposition character. At the time, Lanolin was the fan-favorite background character in the comics who otherwise had no defined character traits besides being high-strung. Right as I was planning to promote the adventure, the character was serendipitously being promoted as a character taking center stage in a new story.

However, the new Lanolin was a markedly different character, an action girl with a special Wispon to boot. I imagine this might cause some confusion for GMs reviewing the system if they are more familiar with this current depiction (to say nothing of her currently controversial reputation). To rectify the disparity, the adventure now suggests it takes place at an undefined time prior to Lanolin's promotion to leader of the Diamond Cutters. Of course, GMs are ultimately free to rationalize this as they see fit, or even replace her with a different character if they desire.
